New work and a moan about the weather

A few more pics from a recent 'sweet treats' shoot. Trying to conjure a feeling of 'light' at this dark and miserable time of year is no easy task! Still, good hot coffee is always welcome.

Like most other other British folk, the rubbish weather is getting me down at bit at the moment. I've had enough of snow, soup and woolly hats! I even found myself dreaming about this recipe for chocolate soup the other day. Yes, chocolate soup - can you imagine!

Sweet treats

I thought I'd share a few foodie pics from a a recent shoot I did. I didn't cook any of these treats - if only my cooking looked this good! I did get to sample them after the shoot (mini, toffee and pecan pies and apricot tarts) and they tasted absolutely divine, particularly the apricot tart!

I've not had much time recently to prepare any of my own recipes for the blog, but I hope to have a huge cooking session over the Easter break.

Happy Easter

I'm taking a few days off over Easter to spend some time with friends and family - and, of course, eat a few hot cross buns! Wishing you all a very happy Easter break.

Weekend reading: The Flavour Thesaurus

I picked up a copy of this book for a couple of pounds on Amazon Marketplace, and it turned out to be some of the best money I've spent in a long while.

Classic pairings like salmon and watercress and liver & onion, but also some more adventurous combinations like watermelon & chilli and blue cheese & peach. Handy kitchen inspiration when you're stuck for ideas or when you fancy experimenting.

I'm also enjoying listening to this at the moment, introduced to me by a dear friend. Such a captivating story.

Weekend reading: Paris V New york

I'm completly addicted to this little book at the moment - a really clever series of graphics comparing Paris and New York - culture, food, people, places etc. It's lovely to flick through and incredibly well-observed.

Cinnamon rock cakes

All photography © Heather Elizabeth Wilkinson 2013

This post was inspired by a recent trip to Rye in East Sussex. The weather that day was absolutely bitter - they type of cold that really gets into your bones, so a hot mug of tea and a decent piece of cake are pretty much essential. I stopped in a lovely little cafe but I was in such a rush to get the train back that I didn't pay much attention to the name - whoops!

Anyway, when I got home I had a urge to bake an enormous batch of rock cakes, loaded with cinnamon and stuffed full of juicy sultanas. Just the thing to accompany a bit of weekend crafting.

I followed this recipe by the faboulous Dan Lepard, with my own addition of three teaspoons of cinnamon and 175g of sultanas. I didn't go for the chocolate drizzle - just didn't seem right on a rock cake!
